Welcome the Year of the Fire Goat
Lunar New Year falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027. Here is everything you need to start the year well: the key dates, what to do before and after, your sign's outlook and a charm for the year ahead.
The New Year calendar
The feng shui year begins. Flying stars change, and the new Tai Sui takes his seat.
The reunion dinner with family. Stay up late to welcome the year: it is said to bring long life to your parents.
Wear red, give red envelopes, visit family. Don't sweep or take out the trash today.
The 15th day closes the New Year season: lanterns, riddles and sweet rice balls (tangyuan).

Before, during and after
- Deep-clean your home to sweep out the old year.
- Pay small debts and return borrowed things.
- Get a haircut; buy something new to wear.
- Hang red decorations and a 福 (blessing) sign by the door.
- Share a reunion dinner, with fish for "surplus".
- Wear red or bright colors; say only kind words.
- Give red envelopes with crisp, new bills.
- No sweeping, no trash, no scissors on day one.
- Visit family and friends with gifts of oranges.
- Avoid arguments, breaking things and lending money.
- Ox and Goat signs: many visit a temple to honor Tai Sui.
- Finish with tangyuan at the Lantern Festival.
Red envelope etiquette
Use new, crisp bills. Choose even amounts and avoid the number 4, which sounds like "death". 8 sounds like "prosper", so $8, $28 and $88 are popular. Give and receive with both hands, and don't open an envelope in front of the giver.
Lucky foods
Fish for surplus, dumplings shaped like silver ingots for wealth, long noodles for long life, nian gao (rice cake) for rising higher each year, and tangerines for gold and good luck.
