Room by room, the classical way

Every room has a job. Here is how to arrange each one so the energy of your home supports rest, relationships and wealth, with floor plans that show exactly where things go.

  1. 1Front door lines up with the window: energy rushes straight through (穿堂煞).
  2. 2A folding screen or tall plant between them slows the flow.
  3. 3Closed shoe cabinet keeps clutter out of sight.
  4. 4Console with a warm lamp and a plant welcomes energy in.
  5. 5Clean doormat and a clear, open path from the door.
The mouth of qi

玄關Entry

Your front door is where energy, opportunity and guests enter. In feng shui it is called the mouth of qi, and it sets the tone for the whole home.

Do

  • Keep the path from the door wide and clear
  • Light it well, day and night
  • Store shoes in a closed cabinet
  • Add a healthy plant and a clean doormat

Avoid

  • Piles of shoes, bags and boxes
  • A burnt-out bulb or a sticking door
  • A mirror directly facing the front door (it sends energy back out)
  • Stairs that run straight down at the door
Common problemFront door lines up with a back door or big window

Called 穿堂煞, the piercing hall: energy rushes in and straight out. Place a screen, a tall plant, a round rug or a bead curtain between them to slow it down.

  1. 1Sofa backed by a solid wall, facing the door: the command position.
  2. 2Wealth corner (財), diagonally across from the door: a healthy round-leaf plant.
  3. 3Round coffee table, no sharp corners pointing at seats.
  4. 4A lamp lights the darkest corner and keeps energy moving.
The heart of the home

客廳Living room

This is where the household gathers. Arrange it so people feel supported and can see who comes in.

Do

  • Put the sofa against a solid wall, with a view of the door
  • Choose round or oval coffee tables
  • Place a plant in the corner diagonal from the door (your wealth corner)
  • Balance light: a lamp in every dark corner

Avoid

  • A sofa floating with its back to the door
  • Sharp corners pointing at seats
  • Dead plants or dried flowers
  • Clutter in the wealth corner
Common problemThe sofa's back faces the door

Turn it if you can. If not, put a console table or a tall plant behind it to give the sofa a backing.

1234
  1. 1Solid headboard against a solid wall, with nightstands on both sides.
  2. 2From bed you can see the door, without lying in line with it.
  3. 3No mirror facing the bed. Move it or cover it at night.
  4. 4Avoid sleeping with your head under the window.
Rest and relationships

臥室Bedroom

You spend a third of your life here. The bedroom should feel calm, safe and supportive.

Do

  • Use the command position: you can see the door from bed, without being in line with it
  • Choose a solid headboard against a solid wall
  • Use matching nightstands on both sides
  • Pick soft, calm colors

Avoid

  • Mirrors facing the bed
  • Sleeping under a window
  • Desks, treadmills and piles of work
  • Clutter stored under the bed
Common problemA beam runs over the bed

Called 橫樑壓床, a pressing beam. Move the bed out from under it. If you can't, paint the beam the ceiling color or soften it with a fabric canopy.

1234
  1. 1Solid wall behind your chair and a clear view of the door.
  2. 2Desk faces into the room, ideally toward one of your lucky directions.
  3. 3Facing the wall with your back to the door feels exposed.
  4. 4A healthy plant on the desk's side for growth.
Focus and career

書房Home office

Where you sit decides how supported you feel at work. Give yourself a strong backing and a clear view.

Do

  • Sit with a solid wall behind you and the door in view
  • Face one of your four lucky directions if you can
  • Keep a healthy plant on the desk's left side
  • Clear the desk at the end of each day

Avoid

  • Sitting with your back to the door
  • Facing a blank wall at close range
  • Sitting under a beam
  • Stacks of unfinished paperwork
Common problemThe desk can only face the wall

Place a small mirror or a reflective frame on the wall so you can see the door behind you.

1234
  1. 1Clean stove with every burner used in turn.
  2. 2Sink on a different wall, not facing the stove.
  3. 3A sink directly opposite the stove puts water against fire.
  4. 4A bowl of fresh fruit on the table for abundance.
Nourishment and wealth

廚房Kitchen

The stove stands for nourishment, and in feng shui it is linked with a family's wealth. Keep it clean and in balance.

Do

  • Keep the stove spotless and use all burners in turn
  • Place stove and sink on different walls
  • Keep a bowl of fresh fruit out
  • Store knives away, not on display

Avoid

  • A stove directly facing the sink or fridge (fire against water)
  • A stove visible straight from the front door
  • Broken appliances left in place
  • An overflowing trash can
Common problemThe stove faces the sink

Add the Wood element between them, which bridges water and fire: a green mat, a plant, or a wooden cutting board.

1234
  1. 1Toilet out of the door's line of sight, lid closed.
  2. 2Mirror over the sink, never facing the door.
  3. 3A plant and fresh towels lift the energy.
  4. 4Keep the bathroom door closed.
Where energy drains

浴室Bathroom

Water carries energy away. A clean, closed bathroom keeps your home's good energy from draining out.

Do

  • Keep the door closed and the toilet lid down
  • Add a plant and fresh towels
  • Ventilate well and keep it dry
  • Repair leaks right away

Avoid

  • A toilet that is the first thing you see from the door
  • A bathroom door facing the front door or your bed
  • Clutter and old products
  • Dripping taps (money slipping away)
Common problemThe bathroom sits in your wealth corner

Keep it spotless and closed, add plants, and place a few stones or earth-toned items to ground the energy.
